PGD is done by taking one or more cells or
Polar body from the embryo on day 3 and getting a diagnosis
for chromosomes or genes. |
| |
 |
Chromosome testing is useful in older women
and in women with repeated failure with IVF. A panel of 5-12
chromosomes are tested for their number. |
| |
 |
An embryo that has a correct number of
chromosomes is called euploid or normal. As opposed to an
incorrect number of one or more chromosomes aneuploid or
abnormal. |
| |
 |
A euploid or normal embryo would
be transferred and has a high chance of forming a normal
baby. Abnormal embryos would be discarded. |
| |
 |
PGD is done after assisted hatching one
blastomere is removed and fixed on a slide. |
| |
 |
The slide then is tested with specific markers
for chromosomes or a specific gene probe. |
