Affording Treatment

There are many misconceptions about the cost of infertility treatment for instance:

  • private and provincial insurance never covers infertility related treatments
  • specialist care is always more expensive
  • reproductive endocrinologists recommend high tech, expensive treatments as “first line” therapies

The media often focuses on infertility treatments such as IVF (in vitro fertilization), ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) and newer technologies such as PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis). The majority of patients who attend fertility centres for treatment will often become pregnant with other less expensive treatments such as timed intercourse, ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination.

Approximately 30% of patients who consult a specialist will eventually require IVF to become pregnant. Patients with male factor infertility, tubal disease, unknown causes, or who are older are more likely to require IVF, donor egg, and associated procedures.

The greatest expense occurs in therapies that are continued but are not working.  A complete evaluation of both partners is critical to prescribing the most appropriate treatment. Women often receive months of therapy on oral medications such as Clomid even though studies have proven that pregnancy is most likely to occur within the first 3 ovulatory cycles. If male factor infertility is present, and not diagnosed and treated, treatment of the female will not be successful.  If the fallopian tubes are blocked and this is not discovered and corrected, treatment is futile.

Provincial insurance will often cover diagnostic tests and surgical procedures.  Newlife Fertility Centre is staffed to help the patient determine the costs they will be responsible for. A payment agreement will be signed by each patient before treatment begins.

Fertility medications are also very expensive, but often private insurance plans will provide some coverage.  You should check your policy to ensure.

The fact does remain that fertility centres are staffed with highly specialized personnel and equipment that is necessary to help you achieve your dream of having a baby. This team includes nurses, doctors, embryologists, phlebotomists, laboratory technologists, ultrasound technologists and administrative staff all working together to help you conceive.

Newlife Fertility Centre provides financial discounts to those who are low income and pursuing IVF treatment through an application program.  There are also options to apply to third party financial institutions such as Credit Medical for loans with monthly payment options.  Newlife Fertility Centre accepts VISA, Mastercard, and Debit.
