Age Relates to Infertility
The team at NewLife Fertility Centre is here to assist you with issues related to female and male infertility, getting pregnant, ovulation symptoms, and more. The quality of a woman’s eggs is critical when trying to conceive. After a woman reaches the age of 35, her egg quality and quantity begin to steadily decline. This regression begins to occur even more rapidly after the age of 40.
As the quality of female eggs declines, it becomes more difficult to conceive. Women are born with a finite number of eggs that can be fertilized. That reserve decreases rapidly over time. At birth, a female has about two million eggs. That number goes down to about 400,000 during puberty. At age 30, the number of eggs is reduced to about 100,000. By the age of menopause, between 45 and 55, the average number of eggs goes down to zero.
Factors To Consider While Trying to Conceive
- We know that it becomes more challenging to get pregnant after the age of 35, but there are multiple reasons at play. Our team would be happy to help you understand why you may be having difficulty and help you take steps to reach your goal. The following are factors to consider:
- For most 30-year-old women, only 12% of their eggs have the potential to become babies.
- By age 40, only 40% of “good eggs” remain.
- The chances of miscarriage rise from less than 10% for women in their twenties to as high as 90% for women over the age of 45.
- The optimal time to have a healthy baby is between the ages of 25 and 35

FAQ About Having a Baby After Age 25
It’s normal to have questions about trying to have a baby after the age of 35. NewLife Fertility Centre has prepared some answers to the questions we frequently receive. Check them out, and be sure to contact us if you have any other questions:
How does age affect fertility and a women’s egg?
A woman’s ability to get pregnant starts to decline by age 30 and declines more rapidly during her mid-30s. By the age of 45, fertility declines so much that it’s unlikely for most women to get pregnant naturally. As women get older, their number of eggs decreases, and their remaining eggs are more likely to have abnormal chromosomes.
What are the chances of getting pregnant for women over 35?
During your 20s and early 30s, about one in four women will get pregnant in any single menstrual cycle. By the time you reach 40, only about one in ten women will get pregnant. Men’s fertility also declines with age.
Are there risks of getting pregnant after 35?
Women who get pregnant at an older age have a higher risk of complications. Pregnant women over 40 are at an increased risk of preeclampsia, and pregnancy can also affect the health of the fetus. Women with high blood pressure can increase the risk of preeclampsia, but even women without health conditions can have complicated pregnancies. The most common problem that occurs with later childbearing is Down syndrome. Getting pregnant at the age of 20 means your chances of having a child with Down syndrome are only 1 in 1,1480. By age 45, those numbers go up to 1 in 35.
